Supervision

Supervision is used in counselling, psychotherapy, and most other mental health disciplines, as well as many other professions engaged in working with people. It consists of the clinical practitioner meeting regularly with another professional, who is trained in the skills of supervision, to discuss client work, concerns and other professional issues in a safe, confidential, and structured way.

The purpose of supervision is to assist and support the clinician in learning from his or her experience with clients and developing his or her skills and confidence, as well as ensuring safe, and ethical practice.

"The qualities of a good supervisor include empathy, understanding, unconditional positive regard, congruence, genuiness, warmth, self disclosure, flexibility, concern, attention, investment, curiosity and openness. In short, all the qualities needed to be a good therapist, but employed differently" Carifo & Hess (1987).

These qualities guide me in my work as a supervisor, in the same way as they do in my work as a therapist.

I offer clinical supervision to psychotherapists of all theoretical modalities and counsellors in practice, in training and those considering setting up a private practice.

I request that supervisees are either members of a professional organisation (psychotherapy or counselling) or are willing to become members, thereby adhering to a code of ethics. I also request that they have, or obtain, some form of professional liability insurance.

I offer supervision sessions in person, via phone or via skype.
